Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I have a fireplace installed in my home? Summit HOme Fireplace can install a fireplace into virtually any room of your home but it is important to be aware of certain considerations. Gas fireplaces, the most common type we sell, are limited by our ability to run a gas line to them and clearances for outside ventilation. Wood fireplaces need a chimney that generally runs above the roof line of your home. State and local codes also play a role. Many communities do not allow fireplaces that use room air for combustion – like B-Vent gas fireplaces or wood fireplaces – to be installed below ground level, or into a bedroom. Electric fireplaces, on the other hand, are not subject to those restrictions.
What is a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace? Direct Vent refers to a gas appliance that uses fresh air from outside the home for combustion, and sends the exhaust back outside, normally in the same system. Most direct vent fireplaces or free-standing stoves use a “Co-Axial” vent system where the exhaust portion of the vent is inside the intake pipe. “Co-Linear,” like those found in direct vent gas fireplace inserts, use two separate, flexible tubes that are run inside an existing masonry chimney.
Will my gas fireplace provide heat? There are two basic types of gas fireplaces: Those designed for heat (heater rated), and those designed just for ambiance (decorative models). The heating versions normally have higher btus (power) and ceramic glass, so they will naturally radiate heat into the room whether or not the optional blower is operating. Decorative fireplaces tend to have lower btus and tempered glass, so they can provide a beautiful flame without overheating a room. Fans can also be added to most decorative fireplaces to increase their efficiency.
Will my gas fireplace work if the electricity goes out? In most cases, yes. The majority of the gas fireplaces we sell have a electronic ignition system, which means they generate their own electricity for basic functions like the on/off control and safety shut-off valve, so they operate without using outside electricity. Blower fans, which do require an electrical hook-up, will not operate if you lose electricity. However, heater rated models with ceramic glass will radiate heat into the room even without the blower operating.
What is a “btu”? “Btu” is an acronym for “British Thermal Unit.” Defined as the amount of energy required to increase the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit, it is a measure of how much heat is being generated. Gas fireplaces are rated in terms of “btu input,” which is the total potential energy available in the gas being delivered to the fireplace. The amount of heat actually delivered to the room will depend on both the btu input and the efficiency of the fireplace. Gas fireplaces carried by Summit Home Center typically have maximum btu input ratings ranging from 15,000 to 60,000.
How much does it cost to operate a gas fireplace? The actual cost to operate a gas fireplace depends on too many factors to give an accurate answer, including the type of fireplace, how it is used, and the current market price of the fuel in your area. But knowing the operation cost is only part of the answer. Direct vent gas fireplaces contribute heat to a home, and most people install them in areas that are heavily used, like lower level family rooms, then turn down thefurnacefor the rest of the house, and using the fireplace as part of a zone heating system. These people tend to see a decrease in their overall gas use and utility costs. The best way to find out how a gas fireplace will impact your energy costs is with the help of the experts at Summit Home Center.
How much heat do I need from my fireplace? There are a number of issues we encourage customers to consider when answering this question. First, where is the fireplace going to be located? Generally speaking, the lower the room is in the house, and the more that room is used, the more heat you will want out of the fireplace. Heat rises, so a large amount of heat generated in the basement will spread easily to the rest of the home. Also, consider the size of the room itself. Getting the highest-powered, most efficient fireplace is probably a waste of money in a small room. Also, what will the room be used for? If the room is on the main floor and will be used primarily for entertaining – meaning a lot of people will be in the room when it is being used – a high heating fireplace could easily be uncomfortable. On the other hand, if the fireplace is in a lower-level family room where just a few people will be, and are usually sitting while in the room, a more powerful fireplace can heat that room, and help add heat to the rest of the house so your furnace won’t have to work as hard. This is another area where the professionals at Summit Home Center can help you determine what would be best for you.
What’s the best fuel to use? It depends on you and your situation. Gas is the most common fuel, because of the heating potential, convenience, realism and ease of operation. Some people prefer wood because they can generate much more heat and, depending on your source for the fuel, can cost much less to operate. Sometimes, electric is the best option because they tend to cost the least and are the easiest to install. The professional sales staff at Summit Home Center is trained to help you determine which type of fuel – and which fireplace – is best for you.
